What can high dose Vitamin C do for you?
You’ve heard that vitamin C is important for years. Ads for everything from orange juice to vitamin supplements to cold symptom treatments all tout vitamin C as “nature’s wonder nutrient” and are quick to praise its benefits. But what’s the big deal about vitamin C? Does it matter whether you get it from an orange, a drink, a powder, or a pill?
Before we talk about why vitamin C is important to the human body, let’s first talk about what vitamin C is. Vitamin C is also known as L-ascorbic acid or L-ascorbate, and acts as an antioxidant. You heard about oxidation in school; effectively, rust. But when you think of oxidation, you think of it in terms of metal. So it may surprise you to learn that vitamin C may help prevent oxidation in cells, promoting longer and healthier cellular lifespans. Perhaps you’ve heard of the disease called scurvy? This is simply a condition where the body does not get enough vitamin C. English sailors are widely credited as being the first to recognize the link between fresh citrus fruits and scurvy prevention (which is why to this day one slang term for the English is “limeys,” after the limes they stocked aboard ships to prevent scurvy.)
Vitamin C has also been shown to be beneficial to promote healthy collagen development. Collagen is the elastic matrix upon which skin and connective tissues are based. Scurvy (vitamin C deficiency) leads to the breakdown of these tissues, attacking the cartilage, skin, bones, and intervertabral sacs that permit us to move. Conversely, ingesting a proper amount of vitamin C can enhance skin and bone health.
Because humans cannot synthesize vitamin C naturally within the body, unlike most species on Earth, humans have to obtain their vitamin C through diet and dietary supplements. But because of the transport systems required to get “raw” vitamin C through the small intestine and into the blood stream, much of the potential nutrient benefits are literally flushed out of the body. Liposome-encapsulated vitamin C has been shown to be a very effective way to get vitamin C to the cells that need it most, because the size and composition of this method of ingesting vitamin C is more readily absorbed into the blood stream, avoiding the active transport mechanisms that conventional sources of vitamin C require.
